What does LCD TV mean and how does it function? LCD stands for liquid crystal display. Behind the screen are a number of pixels followed by a fluorescent light. When this light falls on the pixels, an electric current is generated, creating light variations, which make up the vividly colored images that we see. Generally, the twisted nematic liquid crystal is used which has a naturally twisted crystalline structure.

The screen size of an LCD TV varies between 13-46 inches and it is about 2 inches deep in thickness. They are very light and so extremely easy to install. This indicates that they require very little space and come with a very sleek look. In fact, they can very well be compared to the fragile beauty of a woman!

Next is the consideration of the `burn-in` factor. LCD TVs are not susceptible to `ghosting` which results due to premature dying out of the pixels. The uniquely twisted crystals do not allow `burn-in` or `ghosting` to happen.

There has been a marked improvement in the refresh rate or response time of LCD TVs. Previously, the images tended to lag behind and stay on screen for a period of time that was much more than necessary. Recent technological advances have put all that behind. Usually, the response time varies with the size and quality of the LCD TVs.

The contrast ratio in the more advanced LCD TVs is 1000:1. The contrast ratio is measured by the ratio between the brightest white to the darkest black. The scenario has improved here too. Research is on to push the ratio well past the 1000:1 mark.

Sixty-thousands hours is the average life span of an LCD TV. So at an average viewing of 8 hours a day, an LCD TV should last for about 20 years. The life span of an LCD TV is dependent on the back-light. Since it uses a liquid crystal, there is nothing else which can wear out other than the back-light. Technology has found a way around this problem by creating replaceable back-lights as well.

Power consumption, which is perhaps a very important aspect, has a definite advantage in case of LCD TVs. LCD TVs utilize fluorescent back-lighting and so power consumption is low and steady.

LCD TVs are unaffected by changes in air pressure. This makes it a favorite among air travelers. The performance is consistent and the picture flawless, regardless of the altitude of the airplane.

There is much talk about mercury being used for the fluorescent lighting. But, the manufacturers will vouch-safe for the fact that a nominal amount of mercury is used. This mercury does not come in contact with the viewer and so is entirely harmless.

Some manufacturers are trying to incorporate picture-in-picture feature in their monitors. This feature enables a viewer to see one program on the full TV screen while a few other programs can run in small windows in it. The viewer gets the added advantage to watch a particular program, while waiting for the intermittent advertisements to end in another window.

Experiments are on to extend color reproductions in LCD TVs. The idea is to use two back-lights with slightly differing intensities of colors in consecutive frames. This will enable the viewer to experience a better and a more vivid picture using a more precise color variation.

An LCD TV is a whole new experience, the flavor of which can be savored only by purchasing one. The advantages are manifold and the experience is just exotic. Indulging in one is a worthy bargain.

As someone who has frequently used noise canceling headphones onflight, I truly attest to the claim that they can indeed make your flying experience a lot more welcoming. At least for now, I don’t have to live with the incessant hissing from the drone of the aircraft engine, the humming of the fans or other irritating noises coming from the surroundings while I laze in my economy seat.

It seemed incredible but this is actually made possible by simple audio technology. Microphones in the noise canceling headphones send out sound waves to combat noise whenever they detect its presence. In fact, on most airlines, they actually distribute noise canceling headphones to their guests on business and first class!

Well, instead of paying two or three months of your salary to purchase a business or first class ticket, here’s another cheaper option. Get a pair of noise canceling headphones yourself! But with so many brands and even models available, which should you go for?

Frankly, it depends. I’ll recommend that you go through these 4 considerations and do some research before you narrow down to the exact set that fits your criteria. Have fun picking the cherries!

(1) Budget

Naturally, all of us will like to get the best quality headphones. That is, if price is not an issue. But the truth is, money does matters. After all, the cost of a set of high end noise canceling headphones such as Bose Quiet Comfort series can cut you back by a hefty $300 or more. Hence, before deciding other form factors or criteria which I’ll be discussing later, it’s imperative that you decide the amount you’re willing to spend. That will in turn help you narrow down to the brands and models to review.

For example, if your budget is about $150, you may want to consider only brands like Sennheiser which has an excellent series of noise canceling at that price. Brands like Bose would be of a less likely consideration since they would probably cost you much more than that.

(2) Noise Canceling & Sound Quality

What good is a pair of noise canceling headphones if it doesn’t perform well in that department? You might as well get use a conventional set of headphones! Your personal preference for the extent of the noise cancellation onflight and the quality of the sound experience can easily influence your decision on the headphones to select.

For example, if you’re someone particular about the enjoying your music onflight, getting a higher end set can be just a thin line separating heaven and earth!

(3) Comfort

Noise canceling headphones are usually wore for a stretched period of time, depending on the duration of your flight. They can be a strain if the headphone cups are too tight over the ears. On the other hand, if they’re too loose, you probably have to prop them up everytime you lower your head! Put it simply, we want something that gives the right fit.

A rule of thumb is to ensure that the cups of the headphones go over your ears instead of on them and give a nice fit without losing too much coverage on the sound. At the end of the day, I’ll rather pay more for a pair noise cancelling headphones which scores well in the comfort department than something that’s less expensive but totally unbearable.

(4) Size

Is the headphone easily portable and foldable into a storage box for easy retrieval? Can the storage box be small enough to fit into your handcarry bag? At first glance, these seemed to be minor considerations. But for road warriors, this can matter a lot since every inch of space counts in their luggage. Trust me, I’m speaking from personal experience!

Wouldn’t it be great to customize your nintendo wii Fit, the way you would your mobile phone? Install a unique theme, give it a brand new look and let it shine with character? The fact is, if you’re willing to spend some time brainstorming how you want your nintendo wii Fit to look, customizing it isn’t as difficult or expensive as you thought. Here are 3 ways you can do that :

(1) Spruce Up Your Balance Board With A Designer Silicon Cover

Yes, one of the easiest ways to give your nintendo wii Fit a refreshing look is to clad your balance board with a designer silicon cover. In an instance, you can transform your plain looking balance board into a patriotic national flag, part of a leopard’s body or simply a free styled manifestation of your artistic expression. Not only does the silicon cover add an air of sophistication to your Wii Fit, it also protects the balance board from your perspiration and dirt. The non slip nature of the silicon material also prevents accidents.

In case you’re wondering, nope, such silicon covers aren’t expensive at all. Due to the popularity of the Nintendo Wii Fit, the supply of silicon covers have readily increased and helped to slash retail prices. You can easily get a nice functional cover sometimes for as low as $1 on ebay!

(2) Top It Up With A Great Wii Skin or Case

If having a designer styled silicon cover is not enough for you, take this a step further by dolling up your Wii console & remote control with customised skins. There are some pretty ingenius ideas on such and one of the most hilarious I’ve seen is the Kentucky Fried Chicken (”KFC”) theme. Apparently, someone was creative enough to design the remote control custom skin in the form of a fried chicken drumstick, with the KFC logo proudly displayed on the Wii console! Although it was just a photoshopped picture, well, who knows if that would really turn out to be a best seller?

(3) Customise Your Mii Avatar

Miis are the little avatars that you create on the Wii to be used in various games and configurations. Mii, pronounced as “me” are in essence your graphical representation in the Wii world. They look like Manga versions of the characters in the comic “Peanuts” and can be modified using a series of system features to create a broad range of variation. To add some spice into your Wii Fit experience, you might want to try changing your Mii Avatar to something that represents your true personality! And if you’re game for it, there are some premium services offered on the Internet to create custom made Mii avatars for the price of a cup of Starbucks coffee! Well, that’s not too high a price to pay for a unique expression of your individuality, isn’t it?

In a race to keep abreast of the times against a backdrop of the world’s energy crisis that is pushing prices of energy ever higher, house designs are taking on new considerations and guidelines. Solar homes are an example of such attempts.

This is even the more encouraged by advances in the research and development on the use of solar power as a new viable source of energy. Installing solar panels
for the home is gradually becoming more affordable for the public.

There is yet another area where home builders could capture the free heat directly from the sun through passive solar heating. According to Ron Judkoff, director of the Buildings and Thermal Centre at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado, passive-solar features increase the cost of building a new home by only anywhere from nothing to 3 percent. (On a $ 200,000 home, the maximum additional cost of incorporating passive-solar heating might be only another $ 6,000) It all hinges on the design of the house, which can effectively exploit these natural processes of sunlight and wind for natural heating and cooling.

The low additional cost of building such a house with passive solar heating is encouraging because the annual savings from this additional cost-investment from passive solar heating is in the region of between $ 220 in New Mexico to $ 2,255 in New Hampshire. Based on recent energy prices, a passive solar home in a northern location cold save as much as $ 67,000 on heating and cooling costs over a 30-year period.

There is no way to anticipate how fast natural gas and oil prices will increase in a politically unstable world scenario. It is therefore only wise to prepare for the worst and stay ahead of the world energy crisis and imminent energy price hikes. In the aftermath of an inevitable price rise, without an inexpensive, reliable fuel source, millions of house owners may suffer enormous economic hardships. It is only timely and wise to consider leaning on solar power as an alternative source of energy.

The tremendous savings in energy consumption over a 30-year period will more than compensate for the relatively small additional investment in incorporating passive solar. If energy prices increase by 10 %, the estimated 30-year savings would even reduce the cost of the home to zero.

Many considerations go into the design of a solar home; choosing the right site, the design of the house itself and paraphernalia of other loose ends will have to be tied up. This is best left to the professionals to look into. Work closely with the architect and building contractor to help you materialize the house of your dreams. That way not much can go wrong.

Apart from passive solar heating, you can also install solar panels for your special other needs, to make it a complete package for your solar home.

If you are the parent of at least one teenager, you have undoubtedly been asked when you are going to buy them a cell phone. I have two sons. The oldest just became a freshman in high school. He has never been shy about asking for anything, so we have been peppered for months with the question: When can I have a cell phone? As you well know, teenagers can be very persistent. We finally caved. And speaking from experience, may I strongly suggest you compare cell phone plans before you add your teenager to your plan.

I do not text very often. In fact, I think the only time I have ever texted anyone is simply to reply to their original text message. My wife is the same way, but boy can she use up those cell phone minutes (but I digress). It turns out, however, that my son is a texting monster. He and his friends can be right next to each other, and they will still text each other instead of just talking. And trust me, it is not because my son is shy.

Your teenager, if left unmonitored, can easily send and receive over a 1000 text messages in the first month. No kidding. My advice: make sure you know the costs of texting when you compare cell phone plans. You may pay a little extra for unlimited texting, but not only will you not have any overage charges, you will also sleep better at night knowing you have limited your costs to that one monthly charge. In fact, our son agreed to pay for unlimited texting out of his own money.

Obviously the number of cell phone minutes allowed will be a key focus as you compare cell phone plans. Know the tendencies and schedule of your child. If he or she is home alone for any length of time, you can be sure the phone will be in use. Free nights and weekend minutes are almost mandatory. If the phone is mostly for pleasure use, rather than because you really need them to have a phone during the day so they can contact you, then you might consider only allowing access to the phone during certain non-peak hours. I realize this is easier said than done.

Be aware of web access from the phone. I would highly recommend as a parent that you block this feature. Not only does it prevent your child from visiting inappropriate sites, but unless you have a plan with unlimited access, this can drain your bank account in a hurry. Think about how easy it is for you to get lost surfing the web. Your teenager is destined to do so even more.

Unfortunately, when you compare cell phone plans, you almost have to plan on the worst case scenario. With teens, the worst case scenario is often also the most likely scenario. If having to compare cell phone plans seems too burdensome, you can always just say no a little while longer.

You might own one, if you don’t then you are one of few that have not been sucked into the craze that is the Nintendo Wii. Why is it doing so well in the games console market and why is it threatening the BIG guns aka Microsoft and Sony!

The Nintendo Wii was released around the same time as the Playstation 3. The Xbox 360 was already settled by this time and had a different type of gamer. Though the Nintendo Wii was aimed not only at the average gamer but also at a new breed of gamer.

The Wii works on a motion sensor, it’s controllers work like light sabers but without glowing light like in the star wars movies.

Instead you wave your control around in front of the TV screen which moves your little buddy around, (Depending on what game you play) which is the new approach that Nintendo have taken.

No longer are you using the old style of play, where you plug in your joy pad and bash away at your buttons to get the top score. Nope, the Nintendo Wii makes you interact with the game and makes the gamer more active!

For example, one of the games that comes with the basic package of the Nintendo Wii is Wii Sports. This game will have you playing tennis, boxing, bowling and even baseball!

This is one of the biggest reasons why Nintendo has become a hit, its not all about fancy graphics it’s about becoming more active with the game and having fun!

If you want a more family fun console then the Nintendo Wii is the number one choice to go for. It’s catering for all gamers, it’s still got some pretty hard core games like Resident Evil and co and has your old classics such as Mario Kart.

The Nintendo Wii within the last 2 years has shocked most gaming experts, most believed that Sony and Microsoft were going to storm the gaming scene and leave no room for a 3rd console. Lucky for us this never happened and Nintendo have shown why they have been going so strongly within the last decade.

Nintendo have many plans for the Wii, releasing the Wii Fit a fitness board which is not only fun for all the family but is also a great way of keeping fit and trim. You can see that Nintendo are moving towards pushing kids to a more active roll helping the future generation in a very positive way.

While the Xbox 360 and Sony fight over who has the better graphics, Nintendo have sneakily taken the advantage by convincing people that graphics are not that most important aspect to enjoying a game. Which is so true in many ways, remember your old classics? I bet you would still enjoy playing games such as Mario, Star Fox, the old Resident Evil series etc…

It does seem that most next generation gaming consoles do try and push games that have fancy graphics and advance AI. For me the more real the game is the less fun it has been, I miss fun and addictive gaming which focuses on the user and not a glorified Look how great I look! game which in the end might not have the game play we require.

If you don’t own a Wii then I’m sure you will soon enough, Christmas of 2008 looks like it will be another sell out of all Nintendo Wii’s so don’t wait too long! My advise would to get in quick before the rush starts, with the introduction of the Wii FIT and other new soon to be released ideas from Nintendo I’m sure the Wii will be a very much wanted gift this year.

My name is Gary Levy, owner of http://www.freegifts4you.co.uk the site to get yourself a Free Nintendo Wii or maybe a Free Xbox 360 you pick the gift!

Personalize your cell phone with Apple iPhone covers, faceplates and Shield Protectors. The Apple iPhone features an innovative multi-touch display that allows for easy navigation of the phone’s features.

The Apple iPhone had been rumored for over 4 years now but the waiting is over. When the original Apple iPhone arrived in June 2007, it was greeted by massive hype and long lines at Apple and O2 stores.

Apple points out that iPhone’s features are unlike a lot other cellphones it can be upgraded in the future through software. Apple also insists corporate e-mail through the phone is safe.

Apple recently raised iPhone battery estimates to up to eight hours of talk time, six hours of Internet use, seven hours of video playback, 24 hours of audio playback and more than 10 days of standby. Apple iPhone accessories include Apple iPhone belt clip cases and holsters for carrying convenience.

Apple wanted to make sure that the public learned thru its videos that the keyboard would be easy to use, and also easier than most other smartphones on the market.

Each owner has effectively signed an End User License Agreement when purchasing an iphone and this says that by modifying or using third-party software on the device you will invalidate or void your warranty.

Two of the chips on this board have Apple logos on them, the larger of the two appears to be the iPhone’s ARM processor manufactured by Samsung.

Email: As previously mentioned you can setup Yahoo, Gmail, and hosted Exchange email accounts on the iPhone. (see who voicemail is from, before you call). You will have no problems sending and receiving email.
Sending an email just requires you to enter an email address manually or get it from one of your contacts. The iPhone also boasts desktop-class email, web browsing, and searching.

Visual Voicemail is nice, but you can also get much of the same experience on any web-enabled phone with GotVoice Visual Voicemail if this is important to you. There is also no dragging and dropping functionality other than the flicking to access or delete in email.

Once you get the hang of its “multitouch” interface
you just give it a few days and you won’t have to keep a separate iPod and cellphone in your pocket. Don’t get us wrong, the iPhone is a lovely device with a sleek interface, top-notch music and video features and innovative design touches.

Depending on what you’re doing, the touchscreen serves as your number keypad, your keyboard, your Safari browser and your music and video player. Video YouTube, yes, iPod games,no. You can watch movies, music videos, podcasts and TV shows synced through iTunes. You can watch the most-viewed streaming videos and search for others.

The process takes only a few minutes, after which you can sync the device with your music, videos, photos, TV shows, calendars, movies, e-mail accounts and Web-browser bookmarks.

Apple wanted to make sure that it got the point out to the public in its videos that the keyboard would be easy to use, and also easier than any other smartphone out today.

The company’s participation in the cell-phone market has been hurt by complaints about the year-old iPhone’s data download speeds, which can make simple tasks like sending pictures over e-mail or downloading Internet videos painfully slow.

It’s easy to find all features, and we like that essential features aren’t buried under random menus.

Cell Phone companies such as Nokia and LG Cell Phones have really changed our lives. Mobile phones are more than just a communications device with PDA functionality. They’re a fashion statement, aimed squarely at the young consumer. Some companies concentrate more on the fashion and look of their phones for example LG cell phones are well known for their looks and unique designs. Cell phones are very popular, and they have become affordable for almost anyone. They are all over the place. Everywhere you go, you see and hear people taking calls and engaged in conversations with people in other places. Cell phones are important because they let us keep in touch with our families when we are away from the house, and can be used almost anywhere to make 9-1-1 calls in case of an emergency. Some have games you can play; some let you send email or send instant messages to your friends; and some let you take pictures and send them to people.

Cell phones are an example of the change in the way we communicate. Earlier, everyone had to depend upon landlines. Although we use them almost anywhere there are some places where we should not make or attend our calls for example we should avoid using cell phones in gas stations. Companies such as Motorola, Ericsson, and LG cell phones, all print cautions in their user handbooks that warn against mobile phones in “gas stations, fuel storage sites, and chemical factories”. The threat mobile phones pose to gas stations and their users is primarily the result of their ability to produce sparks that can be generated by the high-powered battery inside the phone.

Cell phones are now doing what PDAs used to do, and people are not using PDAs so much anymore. Or perhaps it should be said that the two are merging together into some sort of hybrid. LG Cell Phones is the leading company here, their phones such as the Viewty is a unique combination of PDA and mobile phone.

Using cell phones while driving is extremely risky. While doing so we not only put ourselves at risk but also everyone around us. According to a recent study, when someone talks on a cell phone while driving, they have the same attention to the road as a person would with a .08 blood-alcohol level. Police don’t allow people to drive drunk, similarly they should not allow people to drive while talking on their cell phones. To overcome this problem cell phone companies such as LG cell phones are now giving free Bluetooth headsets with all of their models.

Looking to buying home theater projectors? Do you want to have full home theater experience? It is fully possible with home theater projectors. But, how do you start? As you read every word of this article, you will discover some of the greatest tips to buying home theater projectors for your home.

A home theater projector is an important part of creating your own home cinema experience. If you have ever wanted the movies to come to you, then this is the way to go.

* Types Of Home Theater Projectors
Home theater projectors come in 2 main varieties for today’s home cinema entertainment. The first is LCD projectors and the second is DLP projectors.

Both technologies deal with how the projector actually processes and projects the light. The LCD technology works via passing light through 3 small LCD panels. This type of projector is great for dimly lit rooms, and auditoriums. These LCD projectors may not be the best type if you want the home theater projector in a room with some light entering.

DLP projectors work by using a single processing chip, which makes the unit lighter compared with LCD projectors. DLP projectors due to the technology, allow much smoother video performance, high contrast, and very little pixilation, which makes them great for home cinemas.

It is a good idea to check out the description of home theater projectors, and make sure they are compatible for home theater use. This will allow you to buy a home theater projector which will work best in your home.

A good point to talk about is that of high definition. There is no doubt in my mind, that HDTV is the way technology is going to go. Projectors can also come in the variety of HDTV projectors, and these can be a great way to keep your technology future proofed, to a certain degree.

You can find 2 formats with HD home theater projectors, and they can be either 720p or 1080p. The difference is in the quality, with 1080p being better, however, realize that prices for 1080p projectors are likely to be more expensive, than 720p HD projectors.

Your home theater projector can also have a variety of ways to be installed. For example, you can either have it in a permanent position, in which case, you may want to install it on the ceiling, with a ceiling mount.

Also you can have your home theater projector to be a free standing projector. This can have many benefits. If you have a small and lightweight unit, you could always use it in other rooms, could take it to work, and even do presentations.

It is a good idea to buy a projector screen. A projector screen will allow you to get maximum benefit from home theater projectors.

You are perhaps wondering what the difference between DTV and HDTV is. After all, they are both digital technologies! However, there is a slight difference, and it is good to know, especially considering that you want the right equipment, so everything works in tandem and in harmony.

DTV stands for digital television, whereas HDTV stands for high definition television. Both these terms are about digital technologies, and it is easy to confuse us. However, you are about to gain an understanding of the differences.

DTV or digital television is the television signal that is transmitted by the various broadcasters. If we think of a watch, we see that we can have analog and digital. We know the benefit of the digital solution.

Digital watches allow us to accurately tell the time, and likely has more features, which analog can’t perform. Likewise the digital television signals allow so much more. However, these signals can be in various sizes and formats.

We can have high definition broadcasted into our homes, and we can have a signal similar to analogue - all through that same DTV broadcast. However, HDTV is different as it is about the television technology.

HDTV is a television technology, and is on the receiving end of things, rather than the broadcast. A HDTV set will show analog quality and high definition. However, when the satellite or cable company broadcast you a high definition signal, you ultimately get the most out of the high definition television set you have.

The interesting point is that with a television set that does not have high definition capabilities; you may be able to buy a converter that allows you to watch high definition channels. Realize however, that this option will not give you the best of high definition, as it is dependent on the television sets capabilities.

Considering the price of LCD HD TV sets, buying a new set is a good idea. You not only get the latest technology, and the best of viewing, you have a future proof set. And considering that in parts of the world, the governments are making digital broadcasting a must, and then it is a good idea to buy a LCD HDTV set.

One thing to add, you will also have to realize that not all stations may be in high definition. In fact most broadcasts are done through digital; however, the quality may not be the best.

To get the best, with your high definition television, you will need to find out the broadcasters who have high definition stations. This usually boils down to satellite or cable. With both making more and more of the channels as high definition, it is truly exiting times for television viewing.
